Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is a Christian holiday that falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday, the day we celebrate his Resurrection. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four Gospels [Mark 11:1–11, Matthew 21:1–11, Luke 19:28–44, and John 12:12–19], which takes place in the days before the Last Supper, his arrest on Maundy Thursday (or, Holy Thursday) and his crucifixion on Good Friday. The crowds lay their clothes on the ground and Palm branches were placed in his path to welcome him as he triumphantly enters Jerusalem. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, or Passion Week, the final week of Lent.

In most liturgical churches Palm Sunday is celebrated by the blessing and distribution of palm branches or the branches of other native trees representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem.
